Payee Services
A Representative Payee is a person or organization legally appointed to manage a person’s Social Security benefits or SSI when they cannot manage or direct the management of their funds. While Social Security often chooses a friend or family member, sometimes a qualified organization is needed — and that’s where The Arc of Mid-Michigan comes in.
With over 10 years of experience, we know the rules and regulations inside and out — but more importantly, we
understand our clients’ needs and goals.
Our Responsibilities as an Organizational Payee
As a Representative Payee, we manage the SSI or SSDI benefits each client receives. Before giving clients their personal spending money, we make sure their benefits are used to cover important needs, including:
-
Secure Housing – Rent is always a top priority.
-
Maintain Utilities – Lights, heat, and water.
-
Medical Bills – Any expenses not covered by insurance.
-
Provide Comfort – Ensuring clients have a safe and comfortable bed.
-
Support Additional Bills – Other bills, as requested.
-
Basic Needs – Monthly money for groceries, toiletries, and other essentials.
-
Client Choice – Any leftover funds go directly to the client or into savings — their choice.
Anyone — any age — who receives Social Security benefits and struggles to manage rent, utilities, or other essentials may benefit from a Payee.
Who Might Need a Payee
